Competitor prices are an important input for pricing decisions in retail. Tracking these prices by hand is time-consuming and error-prone, while automated web data collection (web scraping) makes the process regular and measurable. However, a system that is not set up properly can lead to both technical problems and legal risks.
Consider official channels first
Some platforms offer access to product and price data through an API or a data feed. If such a channel exists, using it is both more reliable and less risky than parsing page content.
Legal and ethical considerations
- Review the target sites’ terms of use and robots.txt guidelines.
- Only collect publicly available product and price information; stay away from areas that require a login and from personal data . Any processing of personal data must also be assessed separately under the applicable data protection law (such as KVKK in Türkiye).
- Republishing collected content (product descriptions, images) can raise copyright issues; the purpose should be internal analysis.
- When in doubt, consult a legal adviser. This article is for general information only and is not legal advice.
Technical considerations
- Respect the server: Limit request frequency, avoid peak hours and don’t put load on the target site.
- Changing page structures: As sites change their design, data collection rules can break. Set up monitoring and alerts that detect errors automatically.
- Product matching: Correctly matching a competitor’s product to your own (barcode, brand, weight) is the most critical step in determining how reliable the results are.
- Data quality: Keep campaign prices, out-of-stock status and unit price differences in separate fields.
- Historical archive: Store prices with timestamps; price movements only make sense when compared with the past.
From data to decisions
Collected data creates real value when it is combined in a reporting tool such as Power BI with price positioning, gap analysis and change alerts. You can read about our own experience in our competitor price monitoring project , and for a similar system, feel free to get in touch with us.
